Seminar "Route of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities in the Baltic States"

In September 8, 2014, local seminar „Route of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities in the Baltic States“ was organised in Vilnius City Hall on the occasion of Solidarity Day of World Heritage cities. It was also dedicated for 25th anniversary since on August 23, 1989, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia stood hand in hand in a peaceful mass demonstration – the Baltic Way. More than a million of people linked Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn to create a 600 km unique human chain across three Baltic countries. The seminar presented and compared the experience of three Baltic capitals in the field of heritage conservation.

The director of City Development Department Arturas Blotnys said welcome speech to the participants of the seminar. Head of Heritage Programmes of the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO Rugile Balkaite spoke on the influence of tourism on Vilnius Old Town. Chief engineer of Vilnius Old Town Renewal Agency Kestutis Masaitis presented implementation of Vilnius Wooden Architectural Heritage Preservation Programme and compared the wooden heritage conservation works in Riga and Vilnius. The director of Vilnius Old Town Renewal Agency Gediminas Rutkauskas gave a presentation on the experience of Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius in the field of heritage conservation and management.
