The state also plays a significant role in the maintenance and preservation of Vilnius’ Old Town through the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture. “Recently, a significant number of heritage sites have been revitalised, showcasing their diverse forms and the extensive efforts required to preserve them. Over the past decade, substantial financial resources have been allocated for the restoration of Lithuania’s cultural heritage, along with private initiatives being encouraged by compensating owners for their expenses. European Union and European Economic Area financial mechanisms have also supported the restoration of significant and publicly appealing heritage sites, adapting them to modern needs and thereby enhancing the image of cultural heritage,” says Vidmantas Bezaras, director of the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture.
Several notable buildings in Vilnius have been restored with state support:
- Since 2014, restoration and emergency removal works have been carried out on the roof, facades, and interior of the Holy Trinity (Basilian) Church, organised and financed by the Department of Cultural Heritage.
- Between 2020 and 2023, facade restoration work was completed on St. Catherine’s Church. The frontons, their reliefs, and ornamental decorations were restored, and old non-original plaster was replaced with new materials in line with traditional techniques.
- Continuous restoration and maintenance work is being carried out at Vilnius University’s historic buildings.
