European Heritage Days 2016
European Heritage Days were organised in all over Lithuania already 23rd time. Theme of the year 2016 is “Cultural Heritage and Communities”. Various communities presented their heritage and told how did they succeed to take care and manage the cultural heritage. European Heritage Days are coordinated and organised by the State Department of Cultural Heritage at the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture; also by local governments, cultural institutions and managers of cultural heritage.
Vilnius Old Town Renewal Agency organised three events in Vilnius:
On September 16th the educational event took place at the Lukiskiu Dominican Monastery. Brother Pijus Eglinas told about the history and activities of the Monastery at St. Philip and St. Jacob Church. Architect restorer Vytenis Zilinskas presented the carillon of the belfry and the restoration works of the Monastery.
The representative of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual (OFM Conv) Marek Adam Dettlaff presented the history and restoration of the Franciscan Church of our Lady of the Assumption on September 18th.
The excursion “Vilnius Jesuits houses, gymnasium and St. Casimir Church: architectural heritage history and present status” was guided by the historian Dr. Liudas Jovaisa also on September 18th. Dr. Jovaisa showed the old refectory, cellars, library, recreational room, the Church and its attic space.
