Seminar “Urban Heritage and Public Communication”

International Seminar “Urban Heritage and Public Communication took place on May 22nd, 2018 in Vilnius Tawn Hall.

New architecture in historic urban context is always controversial. Vilnius has quiet limited experience in the field. The special seminar was organised by the Agency together with  General Representative of Flanders to Poland and the Baltic States; in cooperation with Union of  Architects of Lithuania and  Vilnius City Municipality, EU Horizon 2020 ROCK project group. Key speaker Leo Van Broeck, Chief Architect of Flanders Region, presented examples of very progressive new architecture in historic environment. Chief architect of Vilnius City Mindaugas Pakalnis spoke about Vilnius Master Plan, and about the need to preserve historic urban structure.

Secretary General of Lithuanian National UNESCO Commission Asta Juneviciene emphasized that there is still not enough of effective dialogue between Vilnius city officials and the representatives of local communities, including professional communities of restorers and art historians. Dalia Bardauskiene, Advisor to the Mayor of Vilnius, agreed that the public process which aims to reach a major public support is very important; there are no “holidays” in this field; we should not stop to consolidate communities for heritage conservation tasks.

The Seminar was dedicated to celebration of the National Day of Flanders in Vilnius, and for the European Year of Cultural Heritage. The slogan of the year “Our heritage: where the past meets the future” corresponds to the seminar theme very well. The Seminar was part of the ROCK project.
